We, at the Bridgeport Caribe Youth League, Inc. (BCYL), are very proud of our growth and accomplishments. As we enter our seventh year as a non-profit organization we continue to provide the youth in the greater Bridgeport area with opportunities that will impact their lives beyond the game. Thanks to your sponsorship and support we have stressed to the young boys and girls of our league the importance of giving back to the community. The children have participated in many community service activities. Such as the cleanup of Seaside park; the planting of Caribe trees; providing the needy with turkeys at Thanksgiving; holding coat, food and toy drives which are then distributed by the children to those in need. The idea of combining sports and charity has exceeded all expectations as we continue to stress the importance of becoming vital citizens of their communities.
We have incorporated the importance of education in all of our programs. Our Team-Power-Reading Program, with the program slogan of “Stronger through Knowledge”, has been very successful. Each child receives a backpack loaded with books and writing material and asked to write an essay on a book, their hero or culture. We recognize our honor roll students and provide them with special incentives. In 2009 our honor roll students visited St. John’s University and Citifield home of the New York Mets. The Bridgeport Caribe Youth League Scholarship Fund also reinforces the importance of succeeding in high school and college. Most recently we awarded two of our scholar athletes with high school scholarships to Kolbe and Notre Dame, and we look forward to awarding our first college scholarship in 2010. In addition, in January we introduced the Caribe Youth Saturday Academy to help our high school students prepare for the PSATs and SATs.
Our parent involvement has increased over the years, as BCYL has evolved into a community with entire families assisting and sharing in the activities. We have various family functions throughout the year such as picnics, outings, sports trips and community events. In addition, many players who have graduated from the league have returned to become assistant coaches, scorekeepers and/or to help with field set-ups.
Many of our players are inner city children with limited resources. Their ability to participate in the programs described above would not be possible without your support. Please continue to help the children of Bridgeport by making a tax-deductible contribution to the Bridgeport Caribe Youth League, a 501(C)(3) tax-exempt corporation prior to March 31, 2010. This will ensure that all sponsors are assigned to a team.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Bridgeport Caribe Youth League, I want to thank you for your sponsorship during the last 2 years as we strive to provide the children of Bridgeport with these exciting opportunities.
